Recommendations
Based on the key findings, CSD has four
recommendations that we will be seeking to promote with development
agencies and policy makers and will be using to underpin our own
skills development projects in this area.
Recommendation 1:
Projects must engage with the women and their current
challenges. Projects can do this by providing a long term
commitment to the community, engendering high levels of trust with
the women and changing women’s perceptions of themselves and what
they can achieve through training.
Recommendation 2:
Projects must use existing community structures to make training
more effective. For example, through the strong bonds available in
women self help groups, by engaging with community leaders and with
men.
Recommendation 3:
Changes need to be introduced in stages that women can manage
themselves. This can be helped through integrating the
training for technical and financial support and for capital and
management skills.
Recommendation 4:
Projects can secure longer term change by engaging effectively
with local government structures. Training can then empower women
to articulate their needs and press for relevant services.
