International Women’s Day
On the 8th March 2010, Chris Gale and Kathleen
Collett from CSD attended the Concern Worldwide, ActionAid and the APPG
(All party parliamentary group) on Agriculture and Food for
Development event at the House of Lords to celebrate
International Women’s Day. The event was held to highlight
the important role that women play in the fight against hunger and
the need for the development community to pay greater attention to
the plight and needs of women smallholders.
With this aim in mind, Concern Worldwide launched their global
campaign, ‘Women can’t wait’ to ensure that when world leaders meet
at the MDG (Millennium Development Goals) review in September of
this year, they maintain the commitments they made in 2000.
Particularly, they want to draw people’s attention back to the
needs of women in achieving the MDGs by:
- Listening to their voices
and ensuring that women are included in decision-making
- Developing gender-sensitive policy and
programmes that recognise women’s roles, challenges and
needs
- Ensuring money and funding reaches them to
help them bring about change
